You asked, and we listened.
We are proud to announce the first and only full 102mm (4 inch) titanium intake for the B7 RS4! No reusing stock intake hoses or multi-coloured, multi-material intake setups.
When it comes to the B7 RS4, the choices for upgraded intake systems are slim, to say the least. Other systems on the market are a mix of the stock intake hose, coloured silicone couplers, and a "big" MAF housing. By integrating our titanium MAF flange into the intake tube, we were able to focus on optimizing the entire intake design rather than being confined to building half an intake.
Thoughtful Design
During the design of this intake system, we knew we had to put out more than a piece of pipe and an open filter. We sat down and answered a few questions:
- Can we replicate the factory MAF configuration to avoid running issues?
- Can we provide a one-piece design that replaces the entire intake tract from the filter to the throttle body?
- Can we develop a box that will provide near-factory IATs with the little space available in the B7 engine bay?
After a little CAD work and some 3D printing, we produced a model that we were happy with and got to work building it. What we were left with is a one-piece titanium intake system that resists heat soak, eliminates inconsistent or turbulent MAF readings, and keeps high IATs at bay.
Not A Hot Air Intake
During our R&D process, we found other intakes on the market featured a semi-open box, drawing a large portion of their air from directly above the right side exhaust manifold. During logging, we found that this caused elevated intake air temperatures significantly higher than ambient during low-mid speed driving.
By utilizing all 3 intake air sources that the engineers at Quattro provided as well as a thoughtful airbox design, we were able to keep fresh air coming into the filter pocket rather than forcing the system to draw from the hot engine bay. Use of the factory frontal air duct ensures a constant feed of cool air from the front grille area. We also took advantage of the WOT flap feed area under the headlight by allowing unobstructed flow from down low.
Integrated MAF Design
Our integrated MAF design repositions the sensor behind the tube while keeping it above a 90-degree angle, preventing oil or moisture fouling while cleaning up the engine bay a bit. We also took special care when designing the flange to position the sensor element to match the OEM offset into the tube, ensuring smooth readings and consistent AFRs. Our choice to build the MAF into the intake tube also means less connections and less clamps.
Titanium... why?
The decision to go with CP1 titanium was not one we took lightly. Titanium is not a cheap material to work with, but ignoring the benefits of this aerospace material was not something we could overlook. Piggybacking on our years of success with the 3.0T platform, we couldn't go with anything else.
Titanium is what we like to call "functionally beautiful". Aside from being one of the most lightweight metals available, titanium has a very low heat transfer rate (16 W/m-K) compared to aluminum (152 W/m K), which means it is highly resistant to heat transfer from the engine bay. Intake temperatures play a key role in power production. While other manufacturers sidestep this issue by powder coating or heat shielding their intake tubes, we opted to go straight to the source by choosing a material that will naturally keep intake temps down.
In addition to its excellent thermal properties, titanium has a much higher strength-to-weight ratio than aluminum, meaning that much thinner tubing can be used in our intakes. This means larger internal diameters when compared to aluminum with the same outer diameter. Our 4" titanium intake, as a result, boasts a 5% increase in intake area when compared to a 4" aluminum intake. A higher strength-to-weight ratio also means lighter parts.
Titanium Grade 4, also known as titanium CP1, is the strongest of all commercially pure titanium grades. It combines excellent corrosion resistance with good strength and toughness. This means that your intake will continue to look beautiful well past your engine's expiration date. The lack of paint or powder coating also ensures that the finish will hold up for the long run! Occasional cleaning is all that's required.
